2009 Big Apple Classic Set for Dec 4-5 at Madison Square Garden
Event Showcases Southern HBCU Hoops Action to New York Community

The Big Apple Classic is back for a fourth year Dec. 4-5, 2009, bringing top basketball talent and southern traditions of Historically Black Colleges and Universities to New York City.
This highly anticipated weekend will include a kick-off event on Friday, Dec. 4 at M2 Ultra Lounge, a doubleheader basketball game on Saturday, Dec. 5, half time performances, and other activities expected to draw thousands of alumni, students and fans of participating schools, as well as the general public.
The main event showcases classic rivalries between CIAA schools Virginia State University and Virginia Union University, and MEAC schools Hampton University and Howard University on Dec. 5 in the world famous Madison Square Garden. Game times are 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively. Tickets are $29.50 and $54.50, with discounts for groups of 20 or more.
A portion of game proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society, which is partnering again with the BAC to promote awareness of cancer screening and treatment among African Americans. With 150,090 African Americans expected to be diagnosed with cancer in 2009 and 63,360 expected to lose their battle against the disease, the need for increased awareness is urgent. In fact, African Americans have the highest death rate and the shortest survival rate of any racial or ethnic group in the U.S. for most cancers, mainly the result of social and economic disparities, according to ACS.
Through the BAC and ACS collaboration, ticket holders are more than just spectators of premier college basketball – they are contributors in helping to fight cancer.
A schedule of supporting events will be announced as the BAC dates get closer. For ticket information and updates, visit www.thebigappleclassic.com.
