Virginia Union University will open their 2010 CIAA Women’s Basketball Tournament run against Elizabeth City State University on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at the Time Warner Arena. Tipoff set for 5:00 p.m.

The Lady Panthers (7-18, 2-18 CIAA) are the No. 11 seed in the
tournament, while the Vikings (17-9, 11-9) are seeded sixth.

VUU spilt its regular-season series with Elizabeth State. First, the Panthers won a come-from-behind 57-52 victory. Then, Elizabeth City State outlasted VUU, recording a 65-62 win.

Virginia Union University’s Tonaye Smith has been named the 2010 CIAA Women’s Player of the Year by the CIAA Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

 

A senior forward from Detroit, MI, Smith leads the CIAA in scoring with an 18.9 point per game average. She is also averaging 7.2 rebounds per game. 

 

On the year, Smith has tallied 426 points, 163 rebounds, 25 steals and 13 assists.  She scored 834 points, pulled down 387 rebounds, 55 steals, and 29 assists in her career at Virginia Union.

 

The All-CIAA Teams and Players of the Year will be honored at the 2010 CIAA Basketball Tournament Tip-Off Luncheon on Tuesday, February 23rd

HAMPTON, VA-Freshman Lavonna Spencer was named to the 2010 CIAA Basketball All-Rookie Team, as announced by the CIAA Sports Information Directors’ Association. Spencer is the first Lady Panther to earn this distinction in the past eight years.
 
A native of Hampton, VA (Bethel High HS), Spencer is ranked first on the team in three-point field goals made and ranked sixth in league three-point percentage overall. During the season, she also led the Panthers in single-game assists nine times this season.
 
Her season numbers include 151 points, 35 assists and 52 rebounds.
 
The CIAA Men’s and Women’s All-Rookie Basketball teams will be honored at the tipoff luncheon in Charlotte, NC at next week’s CIAA Basketball Tournament.

The Virginia Union University women's basketball team pulled out a 52-47 victory against Lincoln University Monday evening inside Barco-Stevens Gymnasium. VUU improved to 7-17 overall, 2-17 in the CIAA, and 1-6 in the Eastern Division.

Tonaye Smith recorded a double-double to lead the Lady Panthers, collecting 19 points and 12 rebounds. Teammate Lovanna Spencer added 12 points in the contest.

Next, the Panthers travel to Bowie State on Saturday, Feb. 20. That tip is set for 2:00 p.m. in Bowie , Md.
