Four Panthers received CIAA Honors

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association is proud to announce this season’s honorees for the All-CIAA Football First and Second Teams and All-Rookie team.  
VUU’s David Mims and Hurley Hemphill III were named to the All-CIAA Football First Team, while Chauncey Perry was named to All-CIAA Football Second Team. Stephen Velasquez was named to the 2009 CIAA Football All-Rookie Offensive team.
Offensive Linemen David Mims and Chauncey Perry, helped the Panthers to break the school rushing record with 490 yards against Virginia State University. They also helped VUU to be ranked no. 1 in rushing, ranked no. 4 for total offense averaging 332.0 per game and ranked no.1 in 3rd Down Conversions in the CIAA.  
Senior Linebacker Hurley Hemphill III, was more than impressive throughout the regular season with 87 tackles. Hemphill, who is currently ranked 3rd in the CIAA for total tackles, also accumulated one fumble return for a touchdown.  Additionally, Hemphill helped VUU to be ranked no.1 in Scoring Defense in CIAA holding opponents team to 16.8 points per game.
Velasquez, a freshmen Kicker from Haw River, NC, converted 28-31 extra point attempts. He also made 5-10 field goal of which 44 yards was his longest.     
The Panthers finished their season in a three-way tie for first place in the Eastern Division with a 6-4 overall, 5-2 CIAA record. Head coach Michael Bailey ties coach “Tricky” Tom Harris' 1950 first time head coach winningest percentage at .600.
